Vizio subwoofer not working: re-pair it and fix the sound

A Vizio soundbar's wireless subwoofer comes pre-paired from the factory and re-links automatically whenever both units power on. So when it stops working — no bass, or a blinking light that won't go solid — it's almost always a lost wireless link, most often after a power cut, rather than a broken sub.

Work through the steps in order. The core fix is a manual re-pair, and the only thing that varies by model is which button you hold on the subwoofer — older Vizio subs have a dedicated PAIRING button, while newer ones use the ON/OFF power button for the same job.

Fix it in order

  1. Confirm the subwoofer has power and read its LED

Make sure the sub's power cord is connected. On older models, the rear ON/OFF rocker switch must be in the ON position; on newer models, just confirm the power LED is lit. A solid LED means the sub is already linked — if it's solid but silent, your issue is soundbar-side (next step). A blinking LED means it's disconnected and needs re-pairing (step 3).

  2. Rule out a soundbar-level 'no sound' cause

Before chasing a pairing problem, confirm the bar itself is passing audio: turn the volume up, press MUTE to check it isn't muted, and press INPUT to select the right source (set the TV's digital audio output to PCM if you're on optical). There's no volume knob on the sub — on the remote press SUB, then the Previous/Next buttons to raise the subwoofer level, because at minimum the subwoofer is muted.

  3. Re-pair the subwoofer to the soundbar

On the back of the subwoofer, find either the PAIRING button (older models) or the ON/OFF power button (newer models, which dropped the separate pairing button) and hold it for 5 seconds until the sub's LED starts blinking. Then hold the Power button on TOP of the soundbar for 5 seconds until the bar's front LEDs flash 3 times. The subwoofer's LED should go solid — that's a successful link.

  4. Power-cycle both units

If the re-pair doesn't take, unplug both the soundbar and the subwoofer from the wall, wait 30–60 seconds, then plug them back in. They're designed to re-link automatically on power-up, which clears most temporary glitches.

  5. Move the sub closer and cut interference

Vizio recommends keeping wireless speakers within about 20 feet (30 feet maximum) of the bar, and at least 5 feet away from a Wi-Fi router. Keep the line between bar and sub reasonably clear — cordless phones, baby monitors, and microwaves can also disrupt the wireless link. If it drops only at distance, that's your cause.

  6. Disable Eco / Energy-Star power-down if it cuts out when idle

Vizio bars have an automatic power-saving mode (called Energy Star on older models, Eco Power Mode on newer ones) that can make a subwoofer appear to 'drop out' when the system goes quiet. Toggle it by holding the Power and Volume-Down buttons together for 5 seconds, then see whether the dropouts stop.

  7. Factory reset the soundbar, then re-pair

As a last step, reset the bar: press and hold the Bluetooth and Volume-Down buttons together for 5 seconds until all LEDs flash 3 times. This erases your settings, so you'll set inputs and levels again — then repeat the re-pair in step 3. On SmartCast models (M-Series, Elevate, and newer bars), also check for a firmware update in the Vizio mobile app.

Vizio subwoofer LED states

LED stateWhat it means
SolidLinked and connected to the soundbar. If there's still no bass, the cause is soundbar-side (mute, input, or sub level at minimum).
BlinkingDisconnected from the soundbar, or in pairing mode during the re-link procedure. Run the manual re-pair to get it back to solid.
Off / no lightNo power — check the cord, the outlet, and (on older models) the rear ON/OFF power switch.

Worth knowing

  • Vizio subwoofers ship pre-paired and auto-reconnect on power-up, so a lost link after a power cut is the most common reason one 'stops working'.
  • The subwoofer's pairing control differs by generation: older subs have a dedicated PAIRING button, newer subs use the ON/OFF power button (held 5 seconds) for the same purpose. The soundbar side is always the top-panel Power button.
  • Exact LED colour varies by model and isn't documented consistently by Vizio — go by solid (connected) versus blinking (disconnected) rather than colour.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Vizio subwoofer not working?

Most often the wireless link between the subwoofer and soundbar has dropped — commonly after a power cut. Vizio subs are pre-paired and reconnect automatically on power-up, so a subwoofer that's gone silent usually just needs a manual re-pair: hold the pairing (or power) button on the back of the sub for 5 seconds, then hold the soundbar's top Power button for 5 seconds until its front lights flash three times.

How do I re-pair a Vizio subwoofer to the soundbar?

Hold the button on the back of the subwoofer for 5 seconds until its LED blinks — that's the PAIRING button on older models, or the ON/OFF power button on newer ones. Then hold the Power button on top of the soundbar for 5 seconds until the front LEDs flash three times. The subwoofer's LED going solid confirms the link.

Where is the pairing button on a Vizio subwoofer?

It's on the back panel of the subwoofer. Older Vizio subs have a button clearly labelled 'Pairing'; newer models removed that separate button, so you use the ON/OFF power button on the back instead — hold whichever one your model has for 5 seconds to start pairing. The soundbar has no dedicated pairing button; you use the Power button on top of the bar.

Why does my Vizio subwoofer keep cutting out?

Two common causes: the bar's automatic power-saving mode (Energy Star / Eco Power Mode) putting the sub to sleep when audio goes quiet, and wireless interference or distance. Try disabling the power-saving mode (hold Power + Volume-Down for 5 seconds), move the sub within 20 feet of the bar and away from your Wi-Fi router, and re-pair if the link doesn't recover.

How do I factory reset a Vizio soundbar?

Press and hold the Bluetooth and Volume-Down buttons together for about 5 seconds, until all the LEDs flash three times. This erases your saved settings and preferences, so you'll need to reselect your input and levels afterward — and re-pair the subwoofer, since a reset clears the link.
